No25 – refreshing food in Groningen

Number 25 is a fresh addition to the Groningen scene, serving up fresh and healthy food with a plenty of taste. That means things like a roast duck salad, quinoa and roasted vegetable salad, avocado chicken sandwich and others that shine with flavour (It could be because there is an American chef serving up the…

This cute cafe doesn’t make the best coffees in Groningen, but they’re still good, served with homemade chocolates and the atmosphere is colorful – perfect for a date with the girls or a cosy winter afternoon. You can buy baking accessories, sweet treats and the apple pie is good too. website

Coffee company serve up pretty decent coffee, and on a Sunday thei bagels and sandwiches are the best on offer in Groningen. Come here to enjoy the big windows and watch life go by.  When there’s the odd sunshine there’s a nice terrace out front. They’ve got free wi-fi so you’ll find many students here…

Walk around the small paths around the village, or rent a boat for 15EUR an hour and motor yourself and your friends around.   This is a touristy Dutch destination without being too cringe.  Don’t come here expecting good food, you’ll find plenty of broodje kroket.  But you will find pretty decent apple pie… lekker.

Where to spend a summer day – Paterswoldermeer

Where to spend a summer day – Paterswoldermeer

Picnics, football, icecreams, beach and swimming, ….   You will find many ways to enjoy a summers day here, only a 20min cycle from the city centre.  Bring your own bbq (but go to the other side of the lake, away from the beach to avoid the unofficial police) or bring rugs and read in…

Kaap Hoorn – chill in the sun

    By on June 13, 2013. Posted in , , , .

Chill out in the afternoon sunshine on the terrace by the Paterswoldermeer lake.  In the weekends there’s often a DJ cranking out lounge tunes.  Anything goes here and there’s an outdoor bar to keep you refreshed, so no need to rely on crappy NL service.  The crowd is mostly a kind of young professional, a…

Restaurant Contini – for house wine and warm bread

Contini’s Restaurant in Helpman doesn’t look like much on the outside. But the interior is cosy with candles and you can have an easy conversation over dinner even when it is full of people – which it seems to be on thurs/fri/sat nights. Fortunately the Dutchies love eating early so if you show up after…

    A cosy “stamkroeg” – Singelier

    A cosy “stamkroeg” – Singelier

Located in Helpman, about a 10min cycle south of Groningen, the Singelier is very much a local’s bar. The dark decorated walls, cosy corners and regular locals contribute to a cosy/gezellig atmosphere. Why visit for a drink? There’s a great selection of beers, cheese platters are available and it’s a great place to meet friends…

Simon Levelt – the coffee experience

Simon Levelt – the coffee experience

    By on May 28, 2013. Posted in , .

Simon Levelt Coffee originally started out in Groningen as a shop selling espresso machine and coffee accessories, with coffee on the side. I put it down to the growing student and expat desire for good coffee as the reason that half the store was replaced by styley tables and chairs and the bustling space becoming…

    Black and Bloom

Exceptionally good coffee finally came to Groningen.  While the cappuccino’s are still rivalled by Simon Levelt, Black and Bloom has paved the way to introduce the Flat White to Groningen, and a good one it is too.  The Barista brews coffee with great passion. Also serves yummy homemade treats. +31 6 13165729 blackandbloom.nl
