You’re quickly welcomed by a counter full of delicious food, and there is a whole lot more goodness on the menu.  There are big tables for a more communal type gathering and a few other small tables. Nice people, nice vibe, nice place. Go here for brunch or lunch, or afternoon snacks. http://hej-papa.de/ Hejpapa Poolstraße 32…

Of course everyone knows about the Reeperbahn.  That includes British stags which have more recently been hitting the city.  So you may be wishing for something a bit out of their way: – Hamburger berg, a street just off Reeperbahn with plenty of chilled bars and some with a bit of music to dance too.…

    Jim Burritos – Brooklyn style

    By on September 2, 2013. Posted in , .

This place reminds us of walking into some of our favorite burrito shops in Brooklyn, and the taste and style is similar too.  Burrito`s are good value, tasty and you can order them to come with a kick.  Food is available vegeterian and vegan as well. They aren`t the fastest burrito`s to be made in…

A local lady in one of the Schanze shops recommended this place, and it sure is a goody.  There`s also a bunch of tables outside to sit and enjoy the delicious icecream.  Just watch out for the queues….   Eis Schmidt Schulterblatt 78 20357 Hamburg Germany eis-schmidt.com

Saal II is just one of many cool all-day cafes and bars in Schanze.  This place has a regular cafe menu but has a cool design and tables.  Judge for yourself which side of the street you want to sit depending on where the sun is shining… Saal II Schulterblatt 83 20357 Hamburg Germany Other…

The BOX – a classy evening venue for drinks and music

We stumbled upon this warehouse area just slightly north of the main Altona area.  It`s a really cool and funky interior which seems a great place to curl up on a winter day or in the evening.  It`s set out for small music events although it doesn`t seem as though it`s so frequent. We visited…

    STAY – George Hotel

    STAY – George Hotel

    By on September 2, 2013. Posted in , .

This hotel is situated right on the lake, a little north of the city centre.  We stayed here to have nice access to the lake for walking and running in the mornings.  It’s a kind of design hotel, but not too cool for school. It’s got a really cool rooftop terrace bar for summer days,…

Groninger Brewery – meat beer meat

Groninger Brewery – meat beer meat

    By on September 2, 2013. Posted in , .

This is a proper brewery but also serves up classic german food.  Don’t come here if you’re vegetarian, this place revolves around MEAT!  It served up a mean schweinshaxe (pork knuckle).  Although it’s a big place it probably pays to book at peak periods. You can also buy a keg of beer, if that takes…

    Panter – cafe with a morocan/vegetarian edge

    By on July 24, 2013. Posted in , .

A cool café on Martkstrasse, food with a morrocan-vegetarian edge to it.  It would be good on a cold day, but it’s a bit dark for a nice bright sunny day.  There are some tables outside, but if it@s not perfect then the cafes on the other side of the road will be   Marktstraße…

    Shopping in Hamburg

    Shopping in Hamburg

    By on July 24, 2013. Posted in , .

Hamburg is one of the wealthiest cities in Germany, and those people want nice clothes to wear.  There are a great range of shops from H&M all the way to the top.  Although we aren’t into the Vuitton’s or anything, there is a really good range of shops like Acne, BCBG, etc. And don’t be…

Gretchen’s villa – granola and sunshine

    By on July 3, 2013. Posted in , .

This place  gets awesome sunshine in the morning and has a cool terrace to take advantage of it.  It’s quite a ‘granola’ type of place, and in fact it serves really good granola and fresh fruits for breakfast.  It’s on marktstrasse, so a good place to start your day wandering around the area.   Marktstraße…

Klippkroog – suburban cafe for all occasions

    By on July 3, 2013. Posted in , , .

Klippkroog is a place I can quite easily sink into – it’s got awesome coffee, awesomse apple strudel, they do wicked brunch’s – simple but really good, including nice german wholegrain breads.  It’s a big space with a nice environment inside, there can be groups in the back without being annoying or hang out in…

    Liebes Bisschen – cupakes

    By on July 3, 2013. Posted in , .

A cute little cupcake shop in Hamburg.  They do sell a few other things but generally you’ll see people coing in and out with Cupcakes.  It doesn’t have a range like Magnolia Bakery or anything but what it does have is pretty tasty.  It’s not a big shop so you’ll either have to fend off…

Black delight – a local cafe

Black delight – a local cafe

By on June 22, 2013. Posted in .

Black delight is a neighbourhood kind of cafe – locals breeze in and out for a good cup of coffee. There are seats outside but if the wind is up then it gets great sunshine in the morning through big windows at the front. The food is simple but good quality. Located a bit north…

Stay at Side hotel – central Hamburg

By on June 22, 2013. Posted in .

Side hotel is a pretty edgy design hotel.  But it’s not too designer – the rooms are light and airy, the hotel bar and restaurant are good and was pretty packed throughout the weekend.  It’s in a really good location between the lake and the central city, and being on the fringe of the very…

    Go jogging around the lake

    Go jogging around the lake

    By on June 22, 2013. Posted in , .

Hamburgers are a pretty fit bunch – there seems to be a continuous convoy of people jogging around the lake and it’s easy to see why – it’s a good distance, around 6km;  it’s a beautiful lake; it’s a fairly continuous trail and for the most of it is a gritty dirt which is nicer to run on than pavement. Feel…

    Walk around the city park

The Hamburg city park, to the north of the centre is pretty big.  Enjoy a summer day here along with many locals.  There are loads of playing fields and a forest to walk through. We walked here from Winterhude by walking along the river and then walking a little north.

Pick up kayak’s on the eastern side of the inner city lake. While we haven’t actually kayaked, we say plenty of people doing it on a sunny day and were pretty jealous.   You should also be able to sail on the inner city lake.  We’ve seen on gidsy.com people offering to take you on…

Rent bikes and cycle around the city!

Rent bikes and cycle around the city!

    By on June 22, 2013. Posted in , , .

Hamburg city has a good bike system – just swipe your credit card to set up an account (fairly simple to do) and then take off with one of the red bikes. The pricing guide wasn’t completely clear at the terminals, but basically the first 30mins is free before it starts charging.  Don’t keep the bikes locked…

    Joe and the Juice

    Joe and the Juice

    By on June 22, 2013. Posted in , .

Joe and the Juice made it to Hamburg!  A Danish franchise that has rocked London.  The juices are awesome, and to counter the noise of loud juicing machines then loud music like Martin Solveig is pumped out.  Add to that tattooed and hipster “juicers” (is that in the dictionary) then this place is a good…

Winterhude On the northern side of the lake, a small strip of shops, restaurants and cafes that attract a upper class crowd.       St Pauli Grungy and a mix of many things from hipsters to families to ethnic crowds.  Loads of boutique shops, cafes, restaurants scattered amongst the neighbourhood.
